Project Bonneville - Shock of the new.

One way almost every motorcycle on the road, new and old, can be improved is with upgraded suspension. Our project Triumph Bonneville is no exception.

Not that there is anything wrong with the Bonnie's standard setup; the bike is perfectly rideable and, in fact, handles well. But, like everything else on every bike made, the suspension components are manufactured to a price. After all, nobody wants to pay more than they have to when they buy a bike in the first place.

Looking at the Bonnie, we've customised quite extensively so far. We realised that with improved suspension we had an opportunity to actually make the bike work better, something we felt might be on your list of things to do with your bike, whether it's a Bonneville or not.

We spoke to Walter Preisig at YSS Australia and he put together a package for us that seemed to offer maximum bang for minimum buck. After ascertaining what our budget was, Walter suggested fitting YSS E302T shocks with adjustable preload to the rear and PD fork valves and new springs to the front.

The fitting was done by Les at Mainly Maico in Medowie, north of Newcastle, NSW. He used 15W Motul oil with an air gap of 140mm in the front forks and the bike has been transformed. The ride is noticeably better and there is less front-end dive under braking, but the main difference is in cornering. The bike has the sort of secure feel you'd usually get from a Ducati - high praise from me!

The cost is quite reasonable. The shocks, which are about midrange items, are priced at $499, the fork valves cost $175 and the springs $189. Add labour cost of 9200 for removing forks, installing valves and springs and re-fitting, as well as installing the shocks and setting the whole thing up. It's money well spent and a procedure we have no hesitation in recommending if you like to push things a bit when you're out riding. (PC)
