Vintage Montesa Motorcycles

Vintage Montesa H6 1979 250cc
Montesa was established in 1944 by Pedro Permanyer and Francisco Xavier Bultó with their first Montesa prototype based upon the French Motobécane models. Permanyer and Bultó created a light-weight motorcycle, which resulted in a bike powered by a 95cc two-stroke engine with no rear suspension. They sold 22 of these bikes in the first production year. Bultó designed a new 125cc roadster, which was tested in trail-type rallies and semi-enduros popular in Spain.
The new 125cc roadster went on to enter the 1951 International Six Days Enduro. Montesa entered many races in the 125cc class of road racing in the 1950s. The bikes featured six-speed bolt-on gearboxes with all gears running on needle-roller bearings. The Montesa 125s were very competitive and won second, third and fourth places in the Ultra-Lightweight race at the Isle of Man in 1956.
More than 12,000 of the most successful Montesa street bike of the '50s - the Brio 80 - were produced. The Brio's success led to the opening of a new factory in Espluges de Llobregat, but a slump in the Spanish economy forced Permanyer to cut back on Montesa's racing activities. In May 1958, chief designer Bultó left with several of Montesa's vital personnel, leaving Permanyer not only without a brilliant designer, but also without a 30% share in the Montesa company.
